Russia Launches Large-Scale Strikes on Ukraine

(MENAFN) Russia’s military says it has carried out a coordinated wave of missile and drone attacks on multiple sites across Ukraine, describing the operation as a response to what it called “terrorist attacks” originating from Kyiv.

According to a statement from the Russian Defense Ministry, the overnight strikes targeted a wide range of locations linked to Ukraine’s defense sector, including facilities in Kyiv, as well as areas in parts of the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions under Ukrainian control. Additional strikes were reported in the Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Khmelnytskyi, and Sumy regions.

Officials also stated that fuel depots, transport infrastructure allegedly used by Ukrainian forces, and military airfields were among the sites hit during the operation.

The ministry claimed that the assault involved a combination of precision-guided weapons launched from land and sea platforms, including hypersonic missiles and drones. It further asserted that “the objectives of the strike has been achieved. All designated targets were hit.”

Following the attacks, multiple videos circulated on social media showing explosions in various parts of the country. Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, reportedly confirmed that several districts in the capital experienced temporary power disruptions during the strikes.

Moscow has linked the operation to earlier incidents it attributes to Ukrainian forces, stating that it had warned of a series of “systematic and consistent strikes” against Ukrainian military infrastructure, including drone production sites, command centers, and so-called “decision-making centers.”

Russian officials framed the escalation as a direct response to a drone attack on a residential facility in Starobelsk, located in the Luhansk region, which they say resulted in significant civilian casualties.

That earlier incident involved a series of drone strikes on a college dormitory while students were inside. Reports stated that 21 people were killed and around 70 others were injured, with most of the victims described as teenage girls.
