Iran Rebuilds Air Defense Through Secret Missile Pact with Russia

(MENAFN) Iran concludes a confidential missile agreement valued at nearly €500 million (around $589 million) with Russia aimed at restoring and upgrading its air defense capabilities, according to a report published Sunday by the Financial Times.

As stated by reports, the deal is finalized in Moscow in December 2025. The arrangement reportedly includes the supply of 500 Verba portable launch systems along with 2,500 9M336 missiles over a three-year period.

Under the terms described, deliveries are scheduled to take place in three stages spanning from 2027 through 2029. However, some sources suggest that a portion of the equipment may already reach Iran ahead of the original timetable.

The reported agreement follows military strikes carried out by Israel and the United States against Iranian targets in June 2025, which are followed by a 12-day conflict. In the aftermath, Tehran is said to formally request the defense systems from Moscow in July 2025 to reinforce its protective infrastructure and secure key strategic sites.

The Verba system is regarded as one of Russia’s most advanced short-range air defense platforms. It is designed to effectively counter cruise missiles and low-flying unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), enhancing defenses against aerial threats.
