Russia Calls for Peaceful Resolution on Iran

(MENAFN) Russia is calling for a diplomatic resolution to rising tensions around Iran, warning that military action would only deepen instability, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Monday.

Speaking at a Middle East Conference on the sidelines of the Valdai International Discussion Club in Moscow, Lavrov emphasized that dialogue—not force—remains the only viable option.

"We are closely following Iran-related developments. We welcome the mediation efforts offered by the Sultanate of Oman. And of course, we proceed from the understanding that there should be a peaceful settlement here,"

His remarks come as the Trump administration intensifies its military posture in the Middle East, deploying an aircraft carrier strike group along with several warships. At the same time, the U.S. president has continued issuing warnings to Tehran in an effort to pressure Iran into accepting a nuclear agreement.

Lavrov said Moscow is increasingly concerned about Iran’s future and stressed that Russia supports the full normalization of ties between Iran and the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf.

He added that the recent restoration of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia has laid important groundwork for easing regional tensions and advancing broader reconciliation efforts.
